Great hardware, but...

I use these with DASYLab. The hardware is great, but something in DASYLab or the driver makes them very slow over even the fastest Ethernet connection. Should be easy to fix but no action by MCC so far. I also use the USB versions, which work great with the same DASYLab software.

The digital I/O on MCC’s E-series hardware is polled (single value read/write). The underlying UL driver won’t return until the hardware has performed the requested I/O, which is normally quick (a few milliseconds). But inherent to Ethernet communication, there can occasionally be delays/retries that take several hundred milliseconds, or even over a second. These longer delays are not accommodated by DASYLab’s core architecture. USB timing is more deterministic, which fits well with DASYLab’s architecture. Changes to DASYLab’s core would be too intrusive to accommodate these large delays, hence we recommend 0.5 Hz or slower, and small DIO channel count, when using the E-series with DASYLab.

Good quality high speed DAQ with physical limitations

I need a DAQ that can sample all 8 channels at a minimum sample rate of 20kHz per channel and that is Ethernet connected. This unit certainly meets that criteria and does the job, however it is simply not designed for an Industrial environment. I was beat to find something that is so I am currently using this device with reasonable results. The main issues are power and physical mounting. The DIN rail clip it comes with mounts it flat on the rail which mean the connections for the IO go vertically up or down and the Ethernet and power connectors on the end face make the next 40mm of DIN rail space unusable. A well designed DIN rail mountable device has all the IO and the power and data connections going vertically up or down or facing the user on the narrow ends or front narrow side and mounts sideways. I have made up a custom bracket to do this as I do not use the DIO side face but this means that I have to buy a custom bracket and cut off the terminal label and remount it facing the user. Worse still is the power connection. It is a barrel plug from a 110V ac wall wart with no alternatives. Virtually all industrial DIN mountable devices run on 24Vdc and have push in or screw down wire terminals. So to power this I need to take up even more DIN rail space by adding a 24Vdc to 5Vdc power converter and then cut the cable off the unusable wall wart and terminate it onto the converter. Software wise it is a mixed bag. We need the unit to work in a Linux environment and although we have managed to make it work it has taken a lot of effort to do so as the support is not readily available and is not directly skilled in a custom Linux environment. So overall the unit sampling and ability to capture data and transfer it into an Ethernet signal to a host PC is good however the unit is a significant challenge if you want to use it in an industrial environment.

Simple to use

Without having any previous experience with DAQ/Control systems, I was able to set up the E-1608 to control and record data from a new system that I am developing within a couple of days. DASYLab was very intuitive and has a lot of nice features that allowed the system to be setup so that others outside of the project could easily use the product during testing.

The E-1608 is a great addition to our facility

I've never used any DAQ equipment before. We needed to monitor some equipment in our facility and the E-1608 worked perfectly for us. We are mostly using the analog inputs right now but we will be using the digital I/O soon. This was very easy to setup. We have since bought 2 more of the E-1608 to expand the system. We have been wanting to get some DAQ equipment for a few years now but everything else we found was very expensive. Using DAQ equipment from mccdaq.com has opened our eyes to just how much we can monitor in our facility.

NEED MORE

I have been waiting for Measure Computing to release something that supports Ethernet, and move away from PCI/PCIe and USB. I am a true believer in Ethernet for DAQ, and this product has shown why. It is easy to set up, easy to distribute, none of the potential serious errors USB and PCI are susceptible to, and works flawlessly with Instacal and ULx and .NET UL. I want MORE like this, for different measurement/control type.

Compact, solid I/O module

We've used this I/O block in the past, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that it's DIN rail mountable now, with the addition of an optional adapter. Easy to mount and wire, and takes up very little real estate on the sub panel. we will use again!

Answers

An anti-aliasing filter is used to satisfy the Nyquist theorem over a specific bandwidth. In some but not all cases an anti-aliasing filter is not required. By choosing a sampling rate that is at least twice (5 to 10 times recommended) the maximum frequency of your signal you can achieve your sought after results. The E-1608 has one A/D converter that is shared amongst the channels. When 1 channel is sampled, the maximum sample rate is 250 kS/s. If all 8 channels are sampled, the maximum sample rate is 31.25 kS/s per channel.

MCC strives to make the UL as easy to migrate between hardware models as possible, but there are sometimes differences in hardware models that require code changes. You should to check to see which UL error code number(s), and from which functions, your code generates when run on the newer hardware. Then look those errors up in the ULHELP file. Also search on each hardware model in the ULHELP file, to see a list of compatible functions and parameters. Comparing the lists for your two models reveals that the analog output differs as follows: The E-1608 cannot use the AOutScan function in clocked mode (you cannot specify a clock rate). The AOut function (software paced) can be used. Try example program ULAO01

Unlike the USB version, this Ethernet version doesn't support Python. Do you have plans to include support? My company is developing a commercial analytical instrument that will be entirely Ethernet controlled by a Python application. The performance of the 1608 series is perfect for my needs but I need to be able to control the hardware remotely via an Ethernet network. Thanks.

Specified in the datasheet, the E-1608 has +-10,+-5,+-2 and +-1, four ranges to choose from. And it is "software-selectable per channel". But I didn't find how to do that. Which software to use? At least I didn't find anything in Instacal. And I'm using E-1608 with Labview.

The input range is selected in the higher level software program, which in your case, is LabVIEW via our ULx driver. The ULx Create Virtual Channel VI has two inputs that indirectly select the range for you. The two inputs are Minimum Value and Maximum Value. You choose these two values based on your signal/sensor’s analog output range, and then ULx picks the best DAQ hardware input range that can accommodate it.

Header connector W2 provides connections to the digital I/O, the trigger and external clock as well as the power output and digital grounds. Header W4 provides connections to the analog inputs, outputs and analog grounds. The headers are used in place of the screw terminals for accessing the I/O on the E-1608-OEM version. Are you currently working towards providing Linux support for this E-1608 board? Currently, you have almost every USB DAQ board supported, but not this E-1608, yet. Can I expect support Linux support for this board in the near future (including RaspberryPi)? The Measurement and Test Automation industry is utilizing Ethernet based DAQ equipment more and more, due to its many advantages. The E-1608 is a great board, and I hope M.C. continues to expand the E-XXXX series. However, Linux support is a MUST for an engineer like myself, so I really hope support is coming soon. Thanks!

Yes, the E-1608 is supported by our latest release of the Universal Library. I also checked the latest revision of the UL Help to make sure the E-1608 was included and currently all supported hardware including the E-1608 is listed in our Help files. The most common method for using the E-1608 is wirelessly via the tablet/smartphone’s existing Wi-Fi access. The E-1608 would connect to your network via CAT-6 Ethernet cable. While less common, you could instead use a third-party USB to Ethernet dongle for a hard-wired connection. As for discovery, if the E-1608 is connected to the same subnet (wired or wireless), the discovery of the E-1608 is automatic. If not connected to the same subnet, we provide a manual method for discovering the E-1608 by inputting the IP address for the E-1608.
